In most cases, when talking about backlinks, the backlink is the reference that is made by the other site back to your own. Backlinks (also known as inbound links, incoming links, or one-way links) are links from one website to a page on another website. A backlink is the scenario when one of the pages in the Internet references the page in your site, and includes a clickable link for accessing this page. If you boil it down to its most basic, backlinks serve as a vote indicating to other websites that you believe that their content is valuable, worth linking to. There is a strong correlation between the number of high-quality backlinks that a site has pointing to it and its rankings in the SERPs. If a lot of sites are linking to the same web page or site, the search engines may interpret that content as being worthy to be linked to, thus worth being higher up in SERPs (search engine results pages). Quality backlinks are evidence that you have a truly great page, and Google will favor it over other websites of similar topics in order to make sure that Google delivers the absolute best pages to their search engine users.

Generally speaking, the site or page that has more backlinks is going to be higher in Google rankings compared to other websites. When a site gains more backlinks, the search engines deduce that the site has valuable content worth ranking high on SERPs. Studies also suggest that the quantity and quality of backlinks a site has are associated with higher rankings in the search engines, more so than any other SEO tactic. The combination of the volume of backlinks and quality of link sources has proven a valuable combination for determining a top-quality search engine results. 

Following the Googles interpretation that it wants to display the highest-quality results for users search queries, backlinks are also important as they increase trust. Without high-quality backlinks redirecting to your site, you are missing one of the crucial ranking factors, the one which can demonstrate that you are a credible authority in your industry, and therefore deserving of high rankings for your keywords. Backlinks are a crucial aspect of SEO, as they help in building your websites domain and page authority, both of which contribute directly to your rankings in the search results. Building a strong backlink portfolio can help improve the domain and page authorities of your site, and also helps to get your site to rank higher for the targeted keywords.
